Developing any new skill, even math requires practice and going through a learning process. However, using a calculator can interfere with that learning process, which is why some parents choose to avoid giving their child a calculator. If you've decided to provide your child with a calculator, here are some tips on how to keep it from becoming a problem.

How to Teach Your Child to Use a Calculator

  1. First, you need to help your child understand basic math and calculate basic math operations comfortably and correctly without a calculator.
  2. If your child needs assistance to work through their math problems, you can provide other tools to help with this (like an abacus or pencil and paper).
  3. It's important that you talk to your child about the calculator. Let them know of the importance of math and why they need to learn math without a calculator.
  4. Of course, if you will be giving your child a calculator, you need to provide the right type of calculator for them. Right now, a standard calculator will do.
  5. Take some time to sit down with your child and explain how to use the calculator and what each of the buttons means and what they do.
  6. Lastly, you should set the rule to only let your child use the calculator as a verification tool to check their work after they're done processing it on their own.
